| Front | What is the doctrine of discovery? |
| Back | The settlers believed that they were entitled to the land that they found, they called it Terra Nullius which means uninhabited land despite there being many people already living there. The settlers believed that because they were white christians they owned these places and took the land by force or made the Indigenous people sell it to them. Eventually it became a large issue and was turned to the US Supreme Court. |
| Front | What is The Trail of Tears? |
| Back | This is the name given to the route that Indigenous people took as they were forced out of their homelands after the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The Act removed an estimated 60,000- 100,000 Indigenous people from their homes to new lands west of the Mississippi over 5,000 miles away. Between 3,000-15,000 died as they were forced to move without many provisions and as barely any towns along the way allowed them to enter. Even those nations that tried to assimilate to Western ways were forced out. |
| Front | What were the Articles of Confederation? |
| Back | On November 15, 1777 the Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation, the first constitution of the new nation. The Articles created a government in which the colonies - now states - retained most of the power. This left the central government weak, without essential powers like the ability to control foreign policy or to tax people to raise money. This meant that they could not pay their army. |
