Whitewashed adobe stucco, wood, tile, paint, and gilding.- palace of Nasrid sultans of Southern Spain; preserved by Christians to commemorate victory- light, airy interiors; fortress-like exterior- built on hill overlooking city of Granada- contains palaces, gradens, water pools, fountains, courtyards- small, low bubbling fountains in each room to provide cool temperatures in summer

Front London, England. Charles Barry and Augustus W. N. Pugin (architects). 1840-1870 CE. Limestone masonry and glass.- competition held in 1835 for new Houses of Parliament after old one burned down: 97 entrants in contest; 91 in Perpendicular Gothic, 6 in Elizabethan style; thought to be native English styles- enormous structure of 1100 rooms, 100 staircases, 2 miles of corridors- modern office building cloaked in medieval clothes- Barry a classical architect, accounts for regularity of plan- Pugin a Gothic architect, added Gothic architectural touches to structure- profusion of Gothic ornament great than would appear in an original Gothic building- Big Ben is a clock tower, in a sense a village clock for all of England

Mixed-media installation (49-channel closed-circuit video installation, neon, steel, and electronic components).- Korean-born artist who lived in New York City; intrigued by maps and travel: neon outlines symbolize multicolored maps for each state; fascination w/ interstate highway system; neon symbolizes motel and restaurant signs- neon lighting outlines fifty states and District of Columbia (Alaska and Hawaii on side walls)- each state w/ separate video feed; total of 313 monitors- camera turned on to spectator and its TV feed appears on one of monitors; turns spectator into participant in artwork
