French Weighted Gender Exceptions - 96% in 106 cards

======About this deck====== This deck is a list of exceptions to a set of 18 word ending rules which predict French grammatical gender, found by doing a frequency analysis based on word use. The exceptions are listed in the order of their frequency, meaning that the most common exceptions to the rules are listed first. Because of this, it is possible to reach a relatively high percentage of words known based on weight in a very short period of time. For example, it is possible to learn up to 95% gender recognition rate with just 73 cards. The deck goes up to 99.76% at 899 cards. The corpus used was Lexique3, with a total of 30587 nouns included. The frequency weight is the sum of the frequency of the word as it appears the book corpus used by Lexique, as well as frequency of the word as it appears in the subtitle corpus used by Lexique. Each card displays:

• The gender of the word (represented in red for feminine and blue for masculine)
• The overall percentage of gender recognition, meaning the number of words where the gender is known divided by all words in the corpus
• The frequency of the word, in this case the frequency in books and the frequency in subtitles added
• The percentage of gender recognition increase gained by learning the card

This graph shows the total gender recognition percentage plotted against the number of words learned: ======How to use:====== I'm actually not sure of the best way to learn the rules by heart since I learned them by making them, but perhaps just write them out a few times and generally keep them in mind so that all input reinforces them. I would also suggest perhaps deleting the frequency, percentage increase and weight from the back of the card because it's kind of distracting. ======Supplement Deck====== After you do this deck, you should use this deck: https://files.catbox.moe/u16o9f.apkg which is a mix of exceptions/rules, deleting every card beyond the last card that you studied in this deck. The supplement deck challenges recall which is much more efficient, but it also is very poor at teaching the exceptions, so this is why I suggest doing it after this deck. It's actually probably just better to do the rule/exception deck in the first place, not sure. ======Additional Information:======

There are many words in French which change gender based on the gender of the person they're referring to, eg un élève, une élève. This deck and the frequency analysis does not include them.

There are a few words in French which have different meanings based on the gender, eg un livre (a book) and une livre (a british pound). This deck changes a few of the words to their dominant meaning but most are not included. A list of changes is included on my website. A list of the most common words that change meaning based on gender is also included.

The frequency will become less and less accurate to the real world usage as it decreases. You may see some words out of place or some more common slang words placed after some more literary words. I tried to balance the two by adding the freqlivres and freqfilms. This is a limitation of the corpus.

This deck also includes letters of the alphabet which I couldn't remove because I didn't want to add non morphological rules.

The word une clé and une clef are the same word, but with two orthographic representations. This was included as two words in Lexique3.
