π‘ Some motivation: Dutch loves to re-use the same word for different meanings. If you learn the top 3 most common meanings for each word, you can read at C1 (near-native) level!
See for Yourself π (clicking "More" shows all fields)
How to Use π οΈ
1οΈβ£ When you see a new word, click βMoreβ and read to understand how itβs used.
- Donβt try to learn everything at once! Start with 1β2 most common meanings.
2οΈβ£ Once you can easily recall the common meanings, decide if you want to learn extras:
- Word context, uncommon meanings, etc.
- If yes β add the info and reset learning progress.
3οΈβ£ Often a specific usage of a Dutch word (e.g. "zoek") is part of a fixed construction, e.g. "op zoek naar".
- If you want to learn both the meaning of "zoek" and "op zoek naar" at the same time, you can keep them in the same card and then recall both meanings when answering
- If you don't like this, you can split it into a separate card via Edit note β Copy note
π‘ When recalling Dutch β English, cards show by default the number of meanings to be recalled. When recalling English β Dutch, you can optionally click to see how many letters are in the Dutch word, which is useful when there are multiple correct Dutch words π§
Tips for Maximum Efficiency β‘
- Learn only a small amount per card. Annoying card you just can't recall? Make it simpler or delete it.
- Habit building πββοΈ β set your daily new cards to a sustainable number you can do every day, even 1/day counts!
- Prioritize: meanings > pronunciation > gender > plurals > context. You can get very far with only meanings and pronunciation.
- Advanced trick: mnemonics are magical πͺ. Short, funny, gross, or memorable works best. Use it as a bridge for difficult words: Question β Mnemonic β Answer. Over time, you wonβt need the mnemonic.
- And remember, perfect is the enemy of good! Learning a little every day beats trying too hard and giving up π¦
Disclaimer
I canβt guarantee 100% accuracy, although I've been unable to find any significant errors, and compared to human-made decks I firmly believe this deck is an order of magnitude more helpful in learning. AI has gotten extremely good in the last few years π€ Occasionally the text pronunciation guide is wrong because AI doesn't understand phonetics very well, so please rely on the audio pronunciation by humans first and foremost.
