| Front | describe how oxidation reaction of alcohols can be used to distinguish between primary secondary and tirtiary alcohols? |
| Back | the samples of alcohols are subjected to oxidation by K2Cr2O7 and H2SO4 heated udner reflux. primary and secondary alchols will undergo oxidation, thus changing the colour of K2Cr2O7 from orange to green. the flask with the tertiary alcohols will not udnergo any colour change. therefore the orange colour remains and can thus be identified.the flask with primary alcohol, upon oxidation will produce carboxylic acids which can be tested against litmus paper and this be identified. the remaining flask therefore is secondary alcohol where upon oxidation produces ketones which do not turn blue litmus red as in arboxylic acid |
