Sample Data

Front why do metals have high melting points
Back lots of energy required to overcome strong forces of attraction between positive metal ions and delocalised electrons
Front more on solubility
Back - ionic (charged) and polar substances can dissolve in polar solvents e.g. water - non polar substances dissolve in non polar solvents e.g. hexane
Front Van der Waals' forces
Back - caused by: movement of electrons (unbalances charge distribution within the molecule)- creates instantaneous (temporary) dipole which constantly forms and disappears - this induces a dipole in neighbouring molecules, causing weak forces of attraction between molecules - VDW FORCES PRESENT IN ALL MOLECULES BECAUSE ALL MOLECULES CONTAIN ELECTRONS. they are the ONLY forces present between non-polar molecules.
