🔍 Features
- Cleaned & High-Quality Audio: Recordings from Duolingo, Forvo and (as last resort) TTS.
- Nikkud-insensitive typing: If used, the vocalized writing will be cleanly shown below what's entered.
- Fully Vocalized Hebrew & Cursive Font: On the front of "Hebrew → English" cards, Nikkud is filtered, but not for the cursive script (hover/click/long-press on the word to toggle).
- Example Sentences: At least one voiced or unvoiced sentence per note (up to 5 Hebrew/English pairs shown at a time).
- Grammar & Conjugation: Pealim-style conjugation tables embedded on verb cards. Word class is indicated to help with ambiguity, click on it on the front side to further reveal gender.
- Color Coding: Binyan colors, grammar-based backgrounds. Night-mode compatible.
- Useful Hyperlinks: In the top line (with ・), left → right: Morfix, Milog, Klein, Wiktionary, Pealim, Academy of the Hebrew Language.
The middle section links Reverso (beware of homographs).
Pealim searches for the word on single-click and, if present, the shoresh on double-click.
- Streamlined Content: Merged vocab sources. Duplicates removed. Tags cleaned & made hierarchical. Translations and grammar improved.
- Contextual Details: Brief explanations (e.g. for locations), pictures, missing noun genders, roots, irregular plurals, (where found) verb prepositions.
⚠️ Caveats
- Card Order: Original HfS/Duolingo ordering was not preserved. Use tags or Advanced Browser to reorder in the Card Browser (select the cards → reposition).
[If you know of a way this can be exported to AnkiWeb, please send me a message!]
- Typing: Ignores all diacritics entered → no nikkud comparison, even if the correct ones are entered.
- Media Syncing: Anki[Droid] currently uses a slow upload (25-files/batch). If media seems missing, it may still be uploading. Double-click Sync to check status. This can be interrupted & continued without issue.
- Deck Cleanup: Redundant Duolingo fields removed. Top 2000 reduced to ~920 relevant terms (a tag indicates their frequency tier).
- Visual glitches: The cursive font is slightly mismatched in size, which had to be worked around. WEBP/AVIF images and some emoji (→ ) may not render on older OS.
- AnkiDroid: Activate "Settings → Advanced → Type answer into field" and set the appropriate "Card zoom" in "Settings → Reviewing".
- Audio Playback: Uses HTML <audio> tags (not [sound:...] syntax) and JavaScript to randomize, carry a selection across front & back, and selectively play. Its field appears empty in Card Browser — edit only in raw HTML mode (Windows: Ctrl-Shift-x) or risk deletion!
💬 Example Sentences
- Front: If the note has at least two, one will be randomly chosen, with the note's term hidden on the front. Voiced ones are prioritized, their audio auto-played on the back.
- Back: Up to five examples randomly shown at a time. The sentence shown on the front is always repeated on the back.
- Numbers on the ◂/▸ audio buttons: How many unvoiced/voiced ones are present. They only appear when said 5-limit causes some to be hidden.
- Double-tap these numbers to reshuffle and show a different random selection.
- Gray border if the note has 10+ examples. Only the second digit is shown (e.g., 15 → “1”).
- Highlight colors are inherited from the card note's base color — gender mismatches may appear in coloring.
🗣️ Voiced Examples
- Speakers do not match gender consistently — mismatches are common.
- Examples shown on the front will have a gray audio button on the back.
🧩 Fields
- Hebrew: Main vocab term (with nikkud)
- English: Translation
- subtext: Additional context
- gender: ז (masc), נ (fem), or (repurposed for verbs) binyan; affects card coloring.
[פָּעַ for pa'al, פִּעֵ pi'el, הִפְ hif'il, הִתְ hitpa'el, הֻפְ huf'al, פֻּעַ pu'al, נִפְ nifal]
- grammar: Abbreviated grammar type, e.g. n = noun, adv = adverb (triggers stripes: ni = noun irregular)
- shoresh: Three-letter root (with ־ separators); duplicated as (hierarchical) tag with ::
- audio: <audio> elements: not visible in card browser
- inflections: Plurals (color-coded if irregular), conjugations (from Pealim). Auto-opened to:
- A marked TD tag with id=m (= a particular verb form)
- TR tags with class=col (for verbs of which only these tenses are used)
- first TD tag (default)
- notes: Additional info, images, comments
- voiced: Formatted voiced sentence pairs
- examples: Formatted unvoiced sentence pairs
- image: Sometimes using emoji/symbols instead
🛠 To Do / Limitations
- Since initial deck creation, Duolingo has updated its course; changes are not included.
- No Hebrew-only definitions (e.g., from Milog) on the cards.
- Card HTML/CSS/JS is functional but messy.
- Minimal grammar notes — this is primarily a vocabulary deck.
- No tricolor backgrounds (gender/type/number combined).
- Could benefit from English audio for main meanings.
- Shoresh-based grouping, irregular markings missing.
