These "Emerald Spanish" decks aim to have everything you need to bridge the gap between knowing little, and reading Spanish books

This content merges together the best sources on AnkiWeb into one deck with consistent formatting, and my editing of the English translations to be more accurate and closely match the Spanish words for cognates to avoid translation confusion. It also applies Text To Speech (TTS) audio to every card.

Since the entire deck is above the upload limit (250mb) it's split into:

Key features:

  • Allows eyes-free studying through bluetooth headphones and a bluetooth game controller with its buttons configured through the mobile Anki apps' controls settings
  • Convenient to study while walking without needing to look at the screen, you can leave the phone with the screen turned on in your pocket, or hold it, and study through clicking the buttons on the bluetooth game controller
  • I would recommend the "8Bitdo Zero 2" controller, but you can use whatever works

How to use the decks:

• Download and import into your decks
• Configure your settings appropriately to enable new cards on the decks you want to study
• "Parent" decks (the decks containing other decks within them) should be set to enable 9999 reviews and new cards to let all "child" decks (those decks contained within) to propagate their cards up to the parent deck, letting you collapse the decks downwards and study for instance "Vocab" with all your vocab decks' cards mixed into one. This is already set up for you but verify them if it isn't working right

  • "Default" --> New cards/day = 0; Max reviews/day = 9999 (to let all reviews through from child decks but not enable new cards on newly imported decks)
  • "[same as deck name]" --> Per-deck settings, you can set your number of new cards, leave reviews to 9999 to let all through

Why is it called Emerald Spanish? It needs to be discoverable through search engines and easy to tell people what to look for

This is the most comprehensive deck on AnkiWeb as of 2024 since it takes the best of what is available, gets rid of the junk like special formatting, pictures, etc., edits the bulk of translation errors, and applies consistent formatting. It could not have been made possible without the work of others who first created the decks which I used to create this deck, such as (but not limited to):

There are many great decks on AnkiWeb which aren't included in this deck, but it's a work in progress and I can add more if requested.

I aim for it to be the ultimate deck, the only deck anyone needs to download. So if you have suggestions on important content which is missing, tell me in the comments and I will download it, unify the format, review the content and edit translations, merge it into this deck, dedupe the cards against the rest of the deck, apply TTS, and upload a new version.

It's better to have one high quality deck for each language, with everything anyone could need, rather than advising that people create their own decks, because it took me a long time to create this deck and Anki is a complex program, most people do not want to bother creating their own deck and shouldn't have to, especially since editing a deck requires programming experience such as regex, html, and css. And it needs to be easy to use, easy enough to just download it, read the instructions, and study the deck until you can read books, then move on from Anki. The main challenge of creating this deck was applying unified TTS which requires unified format to affectively manage this many decks combined into one, and anyone wanting to combine many decks with audio into one will face this same challenge, even if a deck comes with audio, since that audio will not be consistent with the audio of other decks. The Note Type format of this deck is in general:

Why use Text-To-Speech (TTS) generated audio rather than real voice recordings?

Voice recordings often have poor audio quality and high variation in volume across decks, whereas TTS generated audio is always the same volume, voice, and accent. This lets you focus on the language, not the pronunciation, since pronunciation is straightforward in Spanish and can be studied through actual immersion sources. Imagine trying to study using audio-only on a loud bus, with some decks having half the volume of others or muffled microphone noises: it's not usable. TTS is perfectly consistent and usable.

How to upgrade versions

Summary: Import the new version, search for cards with the new version tag, untag them from the old version, then search for cards that still have the old version remaining and delete them since they are not present in the new version Details:

• Note your current version through the Card Browser's tags for your deck under tag Spanish::Emerald::Version::2 for version 2 for example
• If you are downloading version 3 for example, download it and import it, enabling the options:
  • Import any deck presets (true)
  • Merge notetypes (true)
  • Update notes (If newer)
  • Update notetypes (If newer)
• Search for tag Spanish::Emerald::Version::3 and this shows you newly imported version 3 cards
• Select all those and delete the tag Spanish::Emerald::Version::2 from these because version 3 cards are no longer version 2
• Search for tag Spanish::Emerald::Version::2 and this shows you old cards which are no longer a part of version 3
• Highlight and delete all of just these cards. You will lose progress on them since they weren't merged when importing version 3, and they will appear in edited form most likely in version 3, but that's the tradeoff of upgrading versions. I will keep version upgrade changes to a minimum.

What to avoid

Avoid editing card types and fields, it will prevent ease of upgrade in the future and you will lose review progress since cards won't merge unless you fix the card types to be the same as the originals.

How to disable red and blue coloring for spanish and english respectively:

• Open the Card Browser
• Browse to the desired Note Type to edit on the left hand side
• Edit the Note Type's card Styling to delete the following css code:

.meaning { color: blue; } .expression { color: red; }

How to change the font size

• Open the Card Browser
• Browse to the desired Note Type to edit on the left hand side
• Edit the Note Type's card Styling to edit the font-size tag, for example:

font-size: 30px;
