This is a master deck for the vocabulary of the entire Hebrew Old Testament. Every flashcard contains a Hebrew word, English gloss, and its Occurrence number in the Old Testament. Further, Every word contains a tag for every chapter it occurs in. This means that you can browse the deck and sort by tags to only focus on the vocabulary for specific passages in Hebrew. There will likely be some small variation at times (<1%) depending on which edition of the Hebrew Bible you are reading (BHS, Leningrad Codex, etc.). The glosses were partially derived from Strong's Hebrew Lexicon, personal research, and Logos Bible Software Word lists-- Copyright Faithlife / Logos Bible Software (https://www.logos.com).
Add-on Recommendations: I would strongly recommend two add-ons: "FSRS4Anki Helper" and "Advanced Browser".
FSRS4Anki Helper will make your reviews more efficient and can optimize intervals for specific decks. This is useful if you find it easier/harder to recall the vocabulary from this deck as opposed to others (such as my Chapter-by-Chapter Greek NT vocab deck, check it out!). The Advanced Browser will allow you to search your deck with better precision, and I created a specific field for this deck so you can further search by occurrence number. Want all vocabulary in Ruth 3 that occurs 10x-35x in the OT? Using this add-on, you can get as specific as you would like. Link for Advanced Browser: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/874215009
Tips For Use:
I would recommend searching this deck for the words you want to learn, whether that's particular chapters or occurrence numbers, and place them into a subdeck under the master deck. This would allow you to specifically choose vocab to learn while still reviewing all of your vocab in the master deck.
If you have already been using Anki for Biblical Languages then you can suspend the higher occurrence vocab words and simply review them in your older decks. Most elementary Hebrew grammars and classes focus on high occurrence vocabulary so you can filter this deck by occurrence using the Advanced Browser add-on and suspend those that you already know.
Stratification: Eventually, you should be at the point where you are no longer learning higher occurrence vocabulary but targeting individual books and chapters. This will allow you to read entire books and chapters while understanding every word of the text (assuming you can parse accurately!). Once you have learned all the vocabulary for a particular text, read it with comprehension, and enjoyed it, then you should organize your vocabulary into subdecks according to occurrence. It may look something like this:
Stratifying your decks like this will allow you to use the FSRS4 Anki Helper add-on to set different desired retention rates. Then you can set the higher occurrence decks to aim for higher retention rates (85%, 88%, 90%) and the lower occurrence decks with lower retention rates (75%, 73%, 70%), leading to a far more manageable workload. I would highly recommend doing this because nearly half of the unique vocabulary in the Hebrew Old Testament only occurs 1 or 2 times in the entire Bible. Stratifying decks like this ensures that you won't be bogged down in daily reviews for words that you literally won't encounter until you read the Hebrew OT a second time.
Thanks and I hope this helps you to read the Bible in its original language!
