Cambridge A2 Biology (9700) Flashcards By Al-Hassan (V3)

Biology

This contains flashcards for the CIE A2 Biology syllabus from Chapter 12: Energy & Respiration to Chapter 19: Genetic Technology.

Sample Data

Front Explain how autosomal linkage affects dihybrid inheritances, thus the crosses of such inheritance.
Back - dihybrid crosses and their predictions depend on the assumption that the genes being investigated behave independently of each other during meiosis- not all genes assort independently during meiosis; these are two or more genes that are located on the same chromosome, thus autosomal linkage (in meiosis l)- some genes which are located on the same chromosome display autosomal linkage and remain together in the original parental combination of chromosomes- autosomal linkage between genes affect how parental alleles are passed onto offspring via gametes- when writing autosomal-linkged dihybrid genotypes, we keep the autosomal-linked alleles, thus genes, within a bracket:> e.g. we have a gene of alleles of F and f (F is dominant and f is recessive) and a second gene of alleles of G and g (G is dominant and g is recessive), however, there is autosomal linkage between the two genes:>> so, if an individual is homozygous dominant for both genes, their resultant genotype would be FFGG, but since the genes, thus alleles of each gene, are linked via autosomal linkage, the two-gene homozygous dominant genotype would be written as (FG)(FG)
Front Define 'ecological species concept'.
Back - when there is a population of similar organisms living in the same area at the same time, they can be described as an ecological species
