Deutsch: All 200 Irregular Base Verbs of German with Hints
CONTAINS POSSIBLE MATURE CONTENT (Hint/Hinweis fields)
A complete list of the 200 strong and irregular base verbs of German. The source is directly from the public domain lists of the authoritative dictionary of standard German, Duden.
This deck contains three types of cards:
1. "Active" (active meaning recall): study picture + cloze sentence(s) to find the verb and irregular verb endings
2. "Passive" (passive context): study only cloze sentence(s) to find the verb and irregular verb endings
3. "Sentence" (understanding): study picture + sentences to understand the sentence then recall the irregular verb endings.
Hint Model
German verbs are mainly irregular due to vowel changes in the stem across tenses. The Hint fields are visual shortcuts to the most common vowel changes, e.g. for the verb gehen,
gehen (present) - ging (past) - gegangen (perfect)
represents a vowel change from "e" infinitive to "e" present to "i" past to "a" perfect (Stammvokalwechsel: e-e-i-a). Since there is no change or only a common change in the first two, the Hint visual shortcut deals only with the last two letters: "i-a". This is represented by a German word Hint (Hinweis), in this case "Filmstar". Hence, Arnold Schwarzeneggar, a Filmstar, is a shortcut.
When there is an uncommon change in all the vowels, then the Hint is two words instead of one, e.g. "wenig Dame" (Stammvokalwechsel: e-i-a-e) for the verb vergessen.
Finally, I included an English sentence that uses the Hint word and the primary verb translation to form a Hint Sentence (Hinweis Satz).
You can, of course, customize the Hinweis and Hinweis Satz fields to make them more memorable for yourself.
Note that the existing Hint fields for this deck contains words that could be considered Mature in some jurisdictions (words that are not boring tend to be remembered best by the brain, according to SRS theory). These can be safely deleted via the "Fields..." button in the Anki Browser, if you wish.
Deck Ordering
The 4KFR field is the frequency rank from the 4k word deck, "Deutsch: 4000 German Words by Frequency", the default ordering where available, then alphabetical order.
