Immersive Russian Beginner's Course

Language/Russian

A course for Russian learners using native TV shows and cartoons as the teaching material.

  • Follows the i+1 /1T comprehensible input principle: on each card no more than one new word is introduced.
  • Every card has an audio clip and a screenshot from the native source material.
  • A number of cards per word/grammar point. I always include a number of examples of each new piece of information, in different contexts.
  • I include any information I feel is useful, and extra help on points that I found difficult when I was learning Russian.
  • You can use it for pure listening, but I would strongly recommend that you learn Cyrillic before or during the course to get the most out of it.
  • All cards and explanations are checked with a Russian native who is a professional linguist.

Front Grammar Point: Verbs (Хотеть)Verbs in Russian are by far the hardest topic, but mastering them is key to really understanding the language. We're going to do this piece by piece. To start with, we're going to look at the verb хотеть, which means 'to want'.The conjugation goes like this: я хочуI wantты хочешьyou want (informal)он/она/оно хочетhe/she/it wantsмы хотимwe wantвы хотитеyou want (formal/plural)они хотятthey wantAs you can see, there is a different form of the word for each grammatical person. This means that unlike in English, often the pronoun can be omitted and the meaning still understood from context. This verb is actually irregular, so don't worry about trying to figure out the pattern. Let's look at some examples now.
