Chemistry - Acidity (pKa values)

Chemistry

This deck is a definite guide to learn pKa values. It contains names, molecular formulas and structural formulas of the chemicals. A lot of decks have incorrect values without clear sources. Because of that, I wanted to share this so people have access to a better list. An example is the pKa for water, which some report to b 15.7, while this is antiquated.

Best to learn this along side actual theory on acid-base chemistry.

Images were made using www.molview.com.

The values are based on the below sources:

  • Bordwell: https://organicchemistrydata.org/hansreich/resources/pka/
  • Evans: https://organicchemistrydata.org/hansreich/resources/pka/pka_data/evans_pKa_table.pdf

I will be updating this list regularly. My hope is to extent the list so that the learner will obtain a good sense of relative acidities of different species. As of now, it contains some of the most important acids, and the acidity of a number of hydrocarbons. After extending the list, it might include more alcohols and aromats and heterocyclic compounds. I also want to include more functional groups such as esters, amides, alkyl halides, etc. Once I feel satisified with the list for learning pKa's, I might add a sublist to study theory.

Please give me suggestions for the following:

  • Content: Does this deck contain useful information, presented in a clear manner?
  • Naming: Could you easily find this deck?
  • Correctness: Is there valid reason to believe the data used is incorrect? Are there typos and such?

Sample Data

Front HBr (hydrobromic acid) | inorganic acid, halogen acid
Back approx. -9.8
Extra
Front HPO42- (hydrogen phosphate) | inorganic acid
Back 12.1
Extra
Front H2CO3 (aq) (carbonic acid) | carboxylic acid
Back 6.3
Extra Given that it's hydrous. Anhydrous carbonic acid has a different pKa. Evans' table gives a pKa of 3.6 for carbonic acid.
