Back in 1950 Truman gave the French 40 million USD in economic assistance and military equipment - the onset of US involvement in Vietnam. Between 1950-54 the US gave 2.6 billion dollars to the French accounting for half the cost of the war. By 1954, the French had sent 400 000 troops to French yet they were still losing the war.
