Description:
Overview
Deutsch im Blick (2nd edition, 2017) and Grimm Grammar are a free online first-year German textbook and companion grammar authored by Dr Zsuzsanna Abrams and published by the Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning (COERLL) at the University of Texas - Austin. This deck primarily consists of vocabulary and matching audio files (when available) from the end of each chapter in Deutsch im Blick. Selected elements of Grimm Grammar or vocabulary introduced in the chapter text are also included, along with verb forms when provided in the textbook, grammar, or another public domain source.

I don’t think the textbook makes any claim about which CEFR level (A1, A2, B1, etc…) or ACTFL level it targets. I have added an estimate “A1-A2?” in the deck title. The estimate is based on the amount of vocabulary the first-year textbook presents, but the vocabulary likely does not match exactly the various other A1/A2 lists on AnkiWeb.

Release Notes
- v1.4 – 30Aug2020 – Chapters 1-10 now available. Add vocabulary from Grimm Grammar where possible. See “Grammar Sections Included in Each Chapter” below for details.
- v1.4.1 – 12Sep2020 – No change to audio files. Relabel sections in Chapters 1 and 2 to align with the description in the SECTION variable (i.e., skip SECTION=10 for Chapter 1 and split Chapter 2 sections that were previously collapsed). Add EN1 field as final sort field. Various minor fixes, mostly to further align EN1 variable with textbook. Remove some duplicates and remove or fix a few incorrect entries in other fields. Improve formatting of this document.
- v1.4.2 – 13Sep2020 – No change to audio. Add PART_OF_SPEECH, CHAPLIST, CHAPTER, and SECTION to shared deck. Add tags for all chapters, not just the first. Remove duplicate chapters from CHAPLIST before linking to audio files.
- v1.4.3 – 28Aug2024 – Change deck description from “Deutsch im Blick – All Chapters” to “Deutsch im Blick – Vocab (A1-A2?, book+videos free online)”. Add brief paragraph explaining rationale for including estimated CEFR levels in the description.
- v1.4.4 – 29Aug2024 – Fix formatting of this documentation after deck rename. Add limitation discussing words sourced from Grimm Grammar.
- v1.4.5, v1.4.6 – 29Aug2024 – Fix formatting and links.
- v1.4.7 – 25Nov2024 – Remove ‘scharf’ from word DIB3509045. Fix spelling of ‘Alliierten’ in word DIB8554922, although the misspelling remains in the audio file name and in DE1, since the latter matches the textbook.
File Structure
- WORD_ID: A unique character ID for each note
- EN1: English prompt. Generally this matches the word or phrase given in the text, although ‘the’ is usually omitted for nouns and ‘to’ for verbs. In some cases, additional information has been added to provide clarity, e.g. to distinguish between ‘that’ (the demonstrative pronoun) and ‘that’ (the conjunction), which is clear from context in the grammar. Synonyms or near synonyms are sometimes combined on a single line, in which case the textbook definitions may be collapsed for simplicity.
- DE1: German answer 1. This is the primary form of the word(s), e.g., the singular form for nouns and infinitive for verbs. Rarely, this is a plural form, in which case it is marked with ‘(pl)’. This is a comma-delimited list.
- DE2: German answer 2. This contains the plural form or endings for nouns, derived forms for verbs (third person present, simple past, past participle), and the comparative and superlative for adjectives. Some forms may be omitted if not provided in the text. Sometimes the list of verb forms has ‘wk:’ prepended to indicate weak declension. Plural forms of nouns are usually denoted as a suffix if there are only one or two words, with ‘-’ representing no change. One or more underscores or ‘<>’ are sometimes used to indicate that no form is expected (e.g., if the headword is plural), but these are used inconsistently and usually the field is simply blank in these cases.
- DE3: German answer 3. Any other related German word, e.g. phrases, compound word, usage notes (may be in English), etc…. Sometimes a word that seems redundant is listed with ‘(xref)’. These words exist to provide a cross-reference to audio files with the same name. DE3 is a semicolon-delimited list.
- DE_AUDIO: Links to audio files. Note that generally only elements of DE1, DE3, and plural forms (for nouns) or comparative/superlatives (for adjectives) in DE2 will have associated audio files.
- DE_AUDINF: Contains the text “no audio” if DE_AUDIO is empty. There is no message if audio files are missing for only some elements of DE1-DE3.
- PART_OF_SPEECH: simple one character code indicating if a word is a N(oun), A(djective), V(erb), P(reposition), or O(ther)
- CHAPLIST: A word may be introduced in multiple chapters (including Grimm Grammar webpages, which are treated as separate chapters+section combinations). This is a comma-delimited list giving the chapter and section. Sections are more likely to be incomplete or incorrect for chapters greater than the minumum.
- CHAPTER: The minimum chapter in CHAPLIST. The deck is sorted by CHAPTER and SECTION and DE1 (excluding articles and ‘sich’) and EN1. Note that a word may be associated with a CHAPTER earlier than its (first) textbook chapter if it was introduced earlier in Grimm Grammar.
- SECTION: The section associated with the CHAPTER. Generally, the section from the textbook is a sequential number starting at 1 (but skipping section 10, that is, the tenth section in the textbook (when present) is SECTION=11, etc...).
- Tags: A single tag of the form FCN (which stands for ‘first chapter = N’), where N is the CHAPTER and tags of the form ChN for all unique chapters in CHAPLIST. In other words, to search for cards where CHAPTER=2, use tag=FC2.
Deck contents
The deck contains the following:
- Words or phrases from the glossary at the end of each chapter for which a translation is provided. This includes section headings. In most cases, audio is present.
- Explanations provided in the glossary.
- A few example sentences for words in (1) from the textbook.
- Words that are present in plural form, expressions, sentences, etc… that were included in (1) above where the translation of the word is clear. For example, ‘Verletzungen = injuries’ is a section heading, so ‘Verletzung = injury’ is also included in the deck. As another example, ‘Spritze = shot, injection’ is included in the deck as a derivation of the phrase ‘eine Spritze bekommen’.
- Words presented in selected Grimm Grammar page. For now, the intention is only to limit to words highlighted or otherwise called out in the page, and not, for example, words included in sentences even if the meaning is clear and the word is not elsewhere introduced.
Grammar Sections Included in Each Chapter
Below are the grammar sections included in each chapter. The CHAPTER and SECTION variables used in the deck are also provided (listed as CHAPTER.SECTION, where SECTION is a sequential number starting at 51 for each chapter). Other Grimm Grammar sections are omitted from the deck, as there are more advanced sections in the grammar not covered in the textbook.

Limitations
I may try to improve these limitations if users find the deck useful.
- Verbs may not have all verb forms listed if the forms were not provided in the text.
- Identical (or near identical) audio files may play for words that are listed in the vocabulary for multiple chapters or multiple times in the same chapter. There are only few such words.
- Example sentences are not provided for all Grimm Grammar sections, even when available. Translations of sentences are also generally not present.
- Not all Grimm Grammar sections are included. For example, there is a fair amount of vocabulary in the various Grimm Grammar verb pages. However, most relevant grammar pages with audio are included.
- The automatic inclusion of vocabulary from Grimm Grammar rarely leads to relatively advanced vocabulary words being included in early chapters, for example ‘die Verachtung = disdain’ and ‘der Zwerg = dwarf’ are both included in Chapter 1 because they are found on Grimm Grammar pages the user is referred to in Chapter 1. Users who find this annoying can use the CHAPLIST variable to check whether the word is only presented in Grimm Grammar rather than the textbook vocabulary lists and add their own custom tag to handle these words separately.
