Pop Progressions: Ear Training (I-V-vi-IV + Audio)

Music

This Anki deck is designed to train your ear to recognize the most common four-chord progressions in pop music, specifically using the I, IV, V, and vi chords as defined by the Nashville Number System.

Features:

  • Audio-based questions: The front of each card plays a synthesized four-chord progression.
  • Answer format: The back of the card reveals the progression with chord names and their corresponding Nashville numbers (e.g., C – I – V – IV – vi).
  • Includes all 24 permutations of the I, IV, V, and vi chords without repetition, ensuring comprehensive exposure to each unique order.
  • Progressions are presented in C, D, E, F, G, A, and B major.
  • Chords are synthesized using the Merlin Grand Piano SoundFont (v5.37), available from the Free SoundFonts archive on Archive.org.
  • Two subdecks:
    1. Root Position Deck: All chords are in root position.
    2. Mixed Inversions Deck: Each chord may be in root position or randomly inverted for increased challenge and realism.

This deck is ideal for music students, producers, or anyone looking to strengthen their ear for harmonic movement in a pop music context. However the deck is not intended as a complete ear training solution. Future versions may include additional keys and chord voicings.
